Catering for the ''to-go'' culture with a conscience

We’ve all been there. Stood in the queue waiting for that first glorious hit of morning caffeine, clocking the display of reusable cups available to buy and casting a lone thought to the three wealready have at home…sat in the cupboard…collecting a light film of dust. It’s not that we don’t wantto use our reusable cup. We do! We really do! We care about the planet, honest, but sometimes, well, it’s just more convenient to not be lugging one about in our bags all day.

One survey of 2,000 adults by health company Essity found while 39% of adults may own a reusablecup, an overwhelming 79% admitted leaving it at home on multiple occasions. Another poll of 3,000UK consumers by environmental organisation Hubbub, found that of the 78% who bought hotdrinks, more than half use a single-use cup at least once a week and only 4.6% said they useexclusively reusable cups.

So what’s the answer?

The truth is that, for consumers with hectic lives, striking the balance between social conscience andday-to-day convenience is tricky. This is where foodservice providers, operators and retailers canhelp us to redress the balance, by offering customers a disposable yet sustainable solution to single-use.
